Cagliari thrashed on Gianfranco Zola's debut

Cagliari thrashed on Gianfranco Zola's debut

Cagliari thrashed on Gianfranco Zola's debut

Gianfranca Zola's Serie A coaching career got off to a miserable start when his Cagliari side were thumped 5-0 at Palermo on Tuesday.
Germany forward Mario Gomez missed a penalty and Fiorentina had two men sent off in a 1-0 defeat at bottom club Parma while a spectacular goal by Simone Zaza, who met a corner with a full-blooded volley, gave Sassuolo a shock 2-1 win at AC Milan. AS Roma kept up their title challenge with a 1-0 win at Udinese, although the hosts claimed that Davide Astori's header never crossed the line after it bounced down off the crossbar.

Zola, who replaced Zdenen Zeman after an eight-match winless run, barely had time to settle into his seat before Michel Morganella and Ezequiel Munoz put the Sicilians 2-0 ahead. Cagliari then had Daniele Conti sent off for a second bookable offence in the 26th minute before Paulo Dybala made it 3-0 with a penalty just after the half hour. Dybala and Edgar Barreto completed the rout after halftime, leaving Cagliari (12 points) firmly entrenched in the relegation zone. Palermo (25 points) are joint eighth with Milan. Andrea Costa gave Parma an early lead with a close-range header before Gomez, plagued by injury since his move to Fiorentina, saw a weak penalty saved by Antonio Mirante in the 33rd minute. The visitors had Gonzalo Rodriguez and Stefan Savic sent off in the last 15 minutes.

Roma conquer 10-man Genoa to keep heat on leaders Juventus

Roma are within a point of Juventus after Radja Nainggolan beat 10-man Genoa despite Eugenio Lamanna saving a penalty on his Serie A debut.

It was third hosting second and the wind was all in Genoa’s sails, unbeaten in over two months. The Giallorossi were fresh from a 2-2 home draw with Sassuolo and midweek Champions League elimination at the hands of Manchester City.

Daniele De Rossi was suspended with Leandro Castan, Federico Balzaretti and Lukasz Skorupski sidelined. The Grifone missed Juraj Kucka, but Nicolas Burdisso returned from his ban. Roma had lost five of their last six trips to Marassi and their fans were barred from this away game, so the crowd was entirely Rossoblu.

Rudi Garcia had to chance to close within a point of Juventus, who were held 1-1 by Sampdoria in the early kick-off. Gervinho pulled back for Adem Ljajic, who tried to pass it on rather than shoot unmarked on the edge of the box.

There were timid Genoa penalty appeals when Davide Astori cut off Stefano Sturaro. Mattia Perin was forced into a desperate double save on Gervinho, then Miralem Pjanic’s follow-up and eventually Ljajic blasted over.

Astori and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa were in the book before the half-hour mark, but the game changed when Perin went sliding in to take down Radja Nainggolan on the counter-attack. The red card and penalty were inevitable.

Eugenio Lamanna came on for his Serie A debut and the 25-year-old’s first ever touch of the ball in the top flight was parrying a Ljajic penalty! Lamanna was alert again to smother a Nainggolan strike, but could do precious little when the Belgium international smacked a sensational scissor-kick volley from the edge of the box on Douglas Maicon’s cross. Genoa were furious, as they wanted play stopped for a blatant Ljajic dive in the build-up, but the referee had let it run.

On the stroke of half-time, Alessandro Matri forced a save out of Morgan De Sanctis on the counter. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini was sent off at half-time for arguing with the referee. Ljajic didn’t get enough power to a Maicon cross, poking it into Lamanna’s arms from six yards. Florenzi’s volley was charged down, but De Sanctis had to intercept a Diego Perotti full-back reaching Andrea Bertolacci from six yards. Gasp threw on striker Mauricio Pinilla for defender Sebastien De Maio in a bid to snatch an equaliser for 10-man Genoa.

Gervinho wasted the chance to double Roma’s lead, as he was one-on-one with Lamanna from a quickly-taken free kick only to fire wide. Perotti turned over the bar after a great first touch, then Florenzi’s effort was deflected for a corner from Gervinho assist. Nicolas Andre Burdisso nodded a free kick over the bar, Pjanic’s strike skimmed the upright and Juan Manuel Iturbe wasted a golden opportunity set up by Florenzi. Genoa thought they had equalised deep into stoppages when a corner was flicked on for Rincon from point-blank range, but he had strayed offside.

Inzaghi: AC Milan will be great again - I promise

Filippo Inzaghi has promised that seven-times European champions AC Milan will break away from their midtable mediocrity and become great again.

"We have alternated very good matches with others which have been less good, but I never claimed to have a magic wand," the AC Milan coach told reporters during an event organised by one of the club's sponsors on Thursday night. "So many other teams are struggling, such as Napoli and Inter, and we need patience but I'm sure we will be great again soon. "I hope this is Milan's moment." Former Italy and Milan striker Inzaghi, who had no previous experience of coaching a senior team, took over before the start of the season hoping to improve on last season's modest eighth-place finish. Milan have won five of their 14 Serie A games this season and are seventh with 21 points, five behind Genoa who are third in the Champions League playoff spot. Inzaghi also praised Japanese attacking midfielder Keisuke Honda, who has scored six Serie A goals this season. "He is doing some very good things," said Inzaghi. "He spoiled us with his six goals but he is also important when he doesn't score. "He's one of those who are very useful to the team for the attitude and the great dedication."

Juventus resumed well

Juventus resumed well
Threatened by the Roma, returned to its height earlier, Juventus took over the sole head of the Serie A easily beating Lazio (3-0) thanks to a brace from Pogba.
The crossover most consistent in Europe continues every weekend. While Roma had (again) won this Saturday on the lawn of Atalantato return up to Juventus (1-2), it was (again) imposed in turn, a few hours later, on the lawn of Lazio (3-0) to use only the controls in theSerie A. True to itself, the Old Lady has shown a cold realism, leaving few opportunities to his opponent and evening showing three times its easy to shrug, apparently without forcing. After a first warning sign Tevez (15th), Paul Pogba who opened the scoring after a nice service that Argentina has beautifully controlled with the edge of the area before adjusting Marchetti (24th) . The French youth international, very legs, has found in the wake of the Roman post on a sublime curling shot cleared the angle of the surface (29e).
It was only postponed: after the goal of 2-0 signed the untenableTevez, well served by Marchisio (55th), Pogba has tripled the setting on the left this time, having been found by Pereyra in edge of the area (64). If the young Mattiello came close to burden the mark of a fine shot strength in the 75th, Juve has mainly controlled the end of the game, despite the expulsion of Padoin in the 70th after two yellow cards. So the men of Allegri resume 3 points ahead of Roma, and continue their weekly walk to the top of Serie A.

Menez was not enough to Milan

Menez was not enough to Milan
AC Milan and Inter have failed to decide is in a lively derby (1-1) and generally dominated by Intéristes. Jeremy Menez opened the scoring with a beautiful goal.
The match: 1-1

Between two teams in difficulty Championship (9th and 10th at kickoff), that Milan derby was of particular importance, both in accounting and in terms of the local honor. Alas, there was no winner in this AC Milan-Inter (1-1), and no one will be satisfied with this little dot harvested. Yet we did not bother on the lawn of San Siro, far from it. After a start to the match saw the fury interiste, which saw Icardi missed a huge opportunity alone in front of Diego Lopez (8th) and Guarin test the Spanish goalkeeper (11th) is AC Milan opened the scoring on a very nice goal Jeremy Menez: After a relay with Essien left El Shaarawy perfectly centered for Menez who opened his right foot to find the side netting a nice recovery (23rd). Fifth goal of the season for the French, who decidedly art to get noticed.
But Milan, with Philippe Mexes holder for the 2nd time in a row and captain, and Rami in an unusual right-back role, could only give way under the onslaught of Inter in the second half. After several missed opportunities, the Nerazzurri were equalized by Joel Obi, who deceived Diego Lopez hit a perfectly placed left of (61). The following is a case of transverse bars, El Shaarawy found that of Handanovic after starting in the back of the defense (75th) before qu'Icardi dispatches his violent recovery Milanese edge (79). And despite a last chance for Milan, a shot Poli well found by the indefatigable Rami (88th), both teams stayed back to back. Milan have not won the last 5 matches and October 19 on the lawn of the Hellas Verona (3-1).
The turning point of Icardi misfires.

If Inter dominating the game throughout most of the game, has not pocketed the three points in the derby, it owes largely to its top scorer Mauro Icardi. On several occasions, the Italian-Argentine striker has missed opportunities while the goal seemed tender his arms. As early as the 8th minute, following a pass completely missed by Muntari, he was alone in front of Diego Lopez, but his little outside of the right does not really worried the Spanish goalkeeper. At the 54th, he inherited the ball into the area with a big mess but dispatched his shot high above the goal. And in the 79th, he missed a bit of luck when his shot found the edge of the goal of Diego Lopez after a center Guarin. The second best scorer of the Championship (7 goals) was not successful tonight.
Player: Rami right back.

In the absence of Abate, Adil Rami found himself in a surprising position of right back, leaving the center to the Mexes-Zapata hinge. And in that position, the former Valencian surprised. Compared to Cafu by Italian commentators, it has multiplied mounted in the right lane, especially in the first period and did not hesitate to launch to the collision of the opponent and offering centers far from ridiculous. Defensively, he proved intractable, offer very little space and Dodô Kovacic, which is sometimes jostle the French defender. Sagna Debuchy had to worry about ...

Milan win nine-goal thriller at Parma without injured Torres

Injured Fernando Torres missed out on making his debut in an astonishing 5-4 win for his new club Milan at Serie A rivals Parma.Jeremy Menez scored an unbelievable back-heel flick as Milan won a match that saw two red cards and an injured goalkeeper.Antonio Cassano faced his former club, but Jonathan Biabiany was injured against the side he almost joined on transfer deadline day. Milan signed Bonaventura instead and he got his debut, but Fernando Torres was in the stands after spraining his ankle, joining Stephan El Shaarawy and Riccardo Montolivo. The Ducali needed a boost after starting with a surprise defeat to newly-promoted Cesena. Gabriel Paletta was sidelined and Roberto Donadoni picked Algerian international duo Abdel Ghezzal and Ishak Belfodil.Cassano’s assist found Belfodil at the near post, forcing Diego Lopez into a decisive save. A free kick was whipped into the middle and Alex scuffed his sliding finish, allowing Antonio Mirante to parry from Nigel de Jong with his feet. Moments later Bonaventura steered a header wide under pressure from Ristovski. The goal was in the air and Bonaventura scored it on his debut, which was also his 100th Serie A appearance. He ran on to a Keisuke Honda assist, peeled away from defenders with his movement and scuffed the finish off balance to anticipate Mirante.Their lead lasted less than 120 seconds, as at the end of a well-worked move with one-touch football, Cassano found himself with a free header on the chipped Cristobal Jorquera cross. FantAntonio found the net for the fourth time in his last three meetings with Milan. The Rossoneri turned it around again with Honda’s header on an Ignazio Abate cross from the right. The Japanese international also scored in the opening round against Lazio.Just before half-time Alessandro Lucarelli was booked for bundling over Menez in the box, though it was arguably a clear scoring opportunity and therefore worthy of a red. Menez got back up to convert confidently and give Milan a two-goal cushion. It was a very open match and Parma got back into it when Dias Felipe was at full stretch to redirect a wayward Jorquera effort.Abate went on a strong run forward, forcing Mirante into a one-handed save at the near stick, but Milan went down to 10 men. Bonera had already been booked when he stuck up a hand to block Jorquera’s shot on the very edge of the penalty area. Cassano’s free kick was deflected over off a Parma teammate.More bad news for Inzaghi, as Alex went off injured, forcing a radical change of both centre-backs. However, just as Parma were pouring forward to get their equaliser, Nigel De Jong robbed Cassano in midfield and went on the counter to beat the on-rushing Mirante.Paolo De Ceglie at full stretch just failed to get on the end of a cross, but Lucarelli rose above the crowd for a towering header on a corner to make it 4-3.It was still wide open, as Menez went on the counter and his shot from a tight angle was fingertipped on to the woodwork by Mirante.Parma went down to 10 men too, as Felipe received his second yellow card for a challenge on Menez, although replays suggest there was barely any contact.Moments later Milan went 5-3 up with a truly amazing goal from Menez. He pounced on a defensive error, seemed to have been pushed wide, but intelligently back-heeled it in with the goal behind him.The madness was still going all the way to the end at the Stadio Tardini. De Sciglio placed a backpass towards Diego Lopez, who appeared to pull a hamstring and couldn’t run after it, allowing the ball to roll into his net.It left Milan with no substitutions, an injured goalkeeper and only a one-goal advantage. Parma were told to shoot on sight and it was a siege in stoppages.

Rumour: Cuardrado 'to be sold by Saturday - or not at all

Fiorentina have set a deadline of this Saturday to have Juan Cuadrado’s future decided.
The Colombia international has been strongly linked with a move away from the Viola this summer.
Manchester United and Barcelona were both thought to be interested in his services, but with the Spanish side going for Douglas from Sao Paulo, it seems that Old Trafford could be the winger’s sole option.
And La Nazione claim this morning that the Tuscan outfit have told any prospective bidders that they will not listen to any offers beyond this Saturday.
Vincenzo Montella’s men either want to quash any deadline-day stresses, or, should Cuadrado leave, have enough time to line up a replaceme

United, Chelsea and Bayern all fight over Roma star

Roma have insisted "Mehdi Benatia is our player,” but Manchester United and Chelsea are fighting for him while Bayern Munich fly in.
The defender has been at the centre of transfer speculation all summer following a contract dispute, just one season into his Giallorossi career.
Sky Sports in England claimed last night that Benatia was already on a flight to Manchester in order to complete his €30m move to United.
Chelsea are also in the running for the £24m rated Moroccan international, but today German channel Sport 1 insist Bayern Munich director Michael Reschke is flying to Italy for advanced negotiations with Roma.
Bayern had already been linked with Benatia in the past, but are stepping up their attempts now that Javi Martinez has been ruled out for seven months with a knee injury.
Amid all this interest, Roma CEO Italo Zanzi spoke to the Corriere dello Sport.
“Mehdi is our player. According to some media sources he had already been sold, but instead he is training with us in a very professional manner.
“It’s a shame about all these rumours. He is a great person and is behaving in the best possible way.
“The transfer market is dynamic, as until September 1 we will evaluate every opportunity and ensure we are ready.”
OUR VIEW
In 2014, Manchester United tussling with Chelsea and Bayern Munich for a player's signature only has one ending. United cannot offer European football of any kind, while Chelsea are struggling to offload a foreign player to meet Premier League regulations - not bring one in. As for Bayern, centre-back is the one area of their team that needs reinforcing, and they are surely every cultured defender's ideal destination. Time for Benatia's wife to order a German Linguaphone course.

Fiorentina come from behind to beat Real Madrid

Mario Gomez and Marcos Alonso wiped out Cristiano Ronaldo ’s goal as Fiorentina beat Real Madrid 2-1.
Warsaw was the host for this prestigious pre-season friendly, but the Viola missed Giuseppe Rossi, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado and Facundo Roncaglia.Carlo Ancelotti fielded many of his top stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez.
The first shot on target after three minutes came from Khouma Babacar, who forced a save out of Keylor Navas. However, Ronaldo went on the counter from that Viola corner and was on hand to tap in an Angel Di Maria assist.
In an entertaining game, Norberto Neto parried from Ronaldo, Babacar’s header and a Mario Gomez strike were just wide.
Gomez drew Fiorentina level with a wonderful diving header on Alberto Aquilani’s chipped cross. Aquilani almost made it 2-1 moments later, his spectacular volley from a tight angle thumping the bar.
Di Maria had the ball in the net, but only after he had been flagged offside, then at the other end Real risked scoring an own goal with a Nacho Fernandez deflection on to the side-netting.
Karim Benzema came off the bench and had a goal ruled offside, but Fiorentina went in front with an ex-Real Madrid player. Marcos Alonso cut in from the left and his angled drive went in despite an attempted goalline clearance.
Only a desperate Navas save prevented Juan Manuel Vargas making it 3-1 with a powerful finish and Di Maria’s cheeky lob was wide of the target.
Josip Ilicic fired inches past the post in stoppages to waste a promising counter-attack.
There was a bizarre moment when a pitch invader tried to blend into the crowd during a corner, wearing a full Real Madrid kit, but he was spotted and removed by the officials.
